Private University College/Private University internal Foundation programmes in Malaysia
Many private higher educational institutions in Malaysia, have developed their own internal university foundation programmes.
These courses are accredited by the Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA) and recognised by the respective foreign partner universities.
Unlike the external qualifications which focus on more general Science and Art-based subjects, the internal qualifications provide specialisation in precise areas of study such as the fields of business, computer & IT, and engineering, and hence, cater to the specific needs of different students. Students should choose the foundation program that best fits their career goals and needs.
Students must be careful in selecting the right Foundation course that will suit them because some universities do not recognise the International Foundation course of other universities.
Students should choose Foundation programmes from prominent and established universities such as Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, Asia Pacific University, KDU University College, UCSI University, Nilai University, HELP University, Curtin University Sarawak, KDU College Penang, others.
Students will take about 10-12 subjects in 3 semesters (1 year). All Malaysian students are required to take the MQA
Compulsory Subjects as listed below. If you have a credit in BM, then you do not need to take Bahasa Kebangsaan.
MoHE Compulsory Subjects
- Bahasa Kebangsaan
- Malaysian Studies
- Moral Studies or Islamic Studies
If you are still not sure of what to study for your degree, the Foundation programme is a good choice and is shorter in duration than the STPM and less difficult. The PTPN Loan is not provided for the Foundation programme.
- Duration: 1 year
- Entry Requirements: Min. 5 credits, inclusive of Maths and 2 pure Science subjects for Foundation in Science or Engineering. For IT, you must have a credit in Maths. Other courses just require 5 credits. For Medicine and Pharmacy, Min. 5B in Maths, Additional Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics but will vary from university to university.
- Recognition: Mostly in Malaysia and some overseas. Will vary from universityto university. Note that a Foundation in Science from one university is generally not accepted by other universities for entry into Medicine or Pharmacy.
- Cost: Generally cheaper than overseas Pre-University courses and A-Levels

Foundation programmes at Curtin Sarawak, a critical stepping stone to tertiary study
It is highly recommended that students completing their secondary school studies up to SPM level and thinking of enrolling at a top foreign university campus like Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) enter either of its foundation programmes.
It could prove a critical stepping stone to tertiary study not only at the Curtin Sarawak campus, which is Curtin University’s largest international campus, but also Curtin’s main campus in Perth or any of Curtin University’s other campuses in the region.
Curtin Sarawak’s foundation programmes comprise one-year (two semesters) courses:
- Foundation Studies - Commerce and Arts Stream
- Foundation Studies - Engineering and Science Stream
According to Professor Dr. Ir. Yudi Samyudia, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor of Curtin Sarawak, the foundation programmes are intensive, focused programmes that enable students to adapt easily to the Curtin academic system. They also guarantee them entry to Curtin’s undergraduate programmes upon successful completion.
“The programmes challenge the students to become active learners who can acquire, interpret, communicate and apply
knowledge within and across disciplines to cultivate the integrative thinking required in a complex and rapidly changing world,” said Professor Samyudia.
Low student-lecturer ratios in classrooms mean the students enjoy a friendly study environment with individual attention and pastoral care. All the academic staff in the foundation programmes are highly qualified and dedicated to ensuring their students get the most out of their programmes.
In addition, modern, diversified teaching methods are applied, which include workshops, introduction to research methods, modern laboratory projects, group projects, oral and multimedia presentations.
Students enjoy advanced technological support such as a modern library, well-equipped laboratories, ample supplies of learning materials, Internet access, and access to online resources at Curtin’s main campus in Perth, Western Australia.
The courses are aimed at developing academic diligence, critical analysis, and a raft of generic skills in students. They provide a solid foundation for the students to adapt to university education more confidently, both in terms of level and style of education. Both courses are recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
