How to Choose the Best Private Universities in Malaysia when going to Education Fairs

Ask the Right Questions at the Education Fairs to Help you Make the Right Decision

Now that you have finished your SPM or STPM, it is time to go "shopping" for the right university that fits you.

There are so many universities out there and from many countries and states at the Education Fairs.
Choosing the right university can be confusing because all the counselors are basically pushing you to join their universities. Some do not really care about whether the course suits you because their job is to get you to register.
A concerned mother came to me at a fair in Midvalley last weekend and she asked my opinion about which university is good for engineering for her son. I told her that Monash and Nottingham are top in the world for engineering.
I told her, "If your son chooses the university with the lake where the price is the same, don't you think it would be better for him to join Monash or Heriot-Watt University Malaysia which are ranked Top in the world by the Times Higher Education compare to the university with the lake where it is just popular in Malaysia because of the branding?"
The son finally came over and we started talking. He was still unsure of what to study. I asked him his top 5 subjects, favorite subjects and interests. His top were all the subjects and favorite were Maths, Physics and Chemistry. He also loves baking and cooking.
"One university in Subang told me to join the culinary and American Degree Program," he said.
"How many As did you get in your trials?" I asked. "10 As," was his reply.
"You are intelligent academically, so you can actually go for Food Science and Nutrition and combine your academic prowess with your love for food." It is important to ask counsellors who are experienced and also concerned about what is best for you, and not what is best for them - which is getting you to register at their university.

So, what to ask during the Education Fair in Malaysia?

Choosing a college or university can be confusing and even stressful with so many out there. There are about 500 private

colleges and universities out there and it is important to choose the right one.
After you survey the universities at the education fair, you should then pay a visit to the campus to see if the environment and facilities are good.
Do not register at the fair because of the discounts and rebates, those are just sales tactics. Would you buy a smart phone without testing it?
Therefore, after selecting the ones that you are most interested in, to visit their campus. While you are there, make sure you take a campus tour and look at the facilities, talk to their lecturers and current students, and also see if the "culture" of the college fits your personality.
Make sure that the students there speak mostly in English, this will help force you to improve your English. Star newspaper research has shown that graduates with good English have salaries which is 25% higher and get promoted quicker than those who don't.
The Ministry of Education stated that there were 70,000 university graduates who were jobless and one of the reasons was weak English.
For example, some people may prefer a small college to a large university, some may like a campus with sports facilities, some

with lifestyle facilities, etc. I once made the mistake of joining a college that consisted of students who spoke mostly Mandarin, it was tough as I am a banana (dunno Mandarin), so please do your research....
While the university might be famous, you have to choose one that best fits you and your needs. You should also know your budget. You won't buy a car without first knowing how much you want to spend. If you cannot afford the fees, then it is no point checking out the university in the first place.
You should not choose a university for the solely based on the following reasons:
My uncle or aunty or friend say, "It is good". You must ask why is it good and the evidence showing that.
  • It is near my house
  • It is cheap
  • My friends are going there
  • The university is famous or popular
  • The university gave me a scholarship even though they are not famous for that course
  • I have heard before that they are the best, but don't know from where
  • I have heard of the university before from advertisements
  • Ask the right questions to choose the best university in Malaysia that fits you
