As the job market has a lot of degree graduates, it is important to remain competitive and continue on to a degree after completing your diploma. Some Diploma graduates have said that they would like to work first before continuing on to study a degree programme.

From experience, my suggestion is to continue immediately after you complete your diploma. This is because when you begin a job, it is difficult to stop. In addition, if you have stopped studies for a while, it may be difficult to find the right frame of mind and motivation to start studying again.

To move up in the corporate world or into management level, the basic requirement is a degree. In addition, the starting salary for a degree holder is higher and the opportunities for promotion is faster because the degree holder is equipped with problem solving, decision making and in-depth technical skills.

Most diplomas can be transferred to another college or university into the Year 2 of the relevant programme. If you have taken the Diploma in Accounting, it is highly likely that you can enter into Year 2 of the degree in Accounting or Accounting & Finance. For the Diploma in Business Administration, you can enter into Year 2 of the degree in Business Administration depending on the exemptions.

However, if you go from the Diploma in Business Administration into the Degree in Accounting, then you may not get the optimum amount of exemptions because the subjects in your diploma are not similar with the degree course of the university that you want to transfer to.

I have two students who graduated with the DIploma in Interior Design from Lim Kok Wing University and they have managed to transfer into Year 2 of the BA

(Hons) Interior Architecture & Design (3+0) awarded by Nottingham Trent University, UK and offered at KBU International College.

So, to transfer from the Diploma in Mechanical Engineering to the degree in Mechanical Engineering, then you will get more exemptions than transferring into the degree in Electrical or Civil engineering at UCSI University.
It would not be possible for you to transfer from the

Diploma in IT into the Degree in Accounting because the subjects are not related at all.

Therefore, you have to keep in mind to transfer into the degree that is similar to your diploma. Diploma in IT or Computing students can transfer their credits into the best university for IT which is Asia Pacific University (APU) and enter into Year 2 depending on the exemptions.

In Malaysia, because of MQA requirements, you have to complete at least 2 years

however if you transfer to Northumbria University, UK, you get to complete the final year of the related degree after your diploma.

I had a student from TAR College Kampar enter into the Final Year of the International Business Management degree at Northumbria University with his Diploma in Marketing.

It would cost roughly about RM30,000-RM50,000 in tuition fees for the final 2 years depending on which course. You can apply for the PTPN Loan up to RM16,000 a year.
It will take some time for the exemptions to be done, so you should apply early.

If you are applying to enter into design or architecture degree courses, then you will need to submit a portfolio as well.
As I represent reputable institutions with a wide range of degrees, please contact me to find out how you can transfer to an institution that best fit your needs.
In order to process your transfer smoothly, you will need to send me the following:
  1. Transcripts of all the subjects taken
  2. Copy of SPM or UEC certificate
  3. Course outline for all the subjects taken – you can request this from your course coordinator. A course outline is a brief description of each subject

taken at your current college or university. The outline is needed for the university that you intend to go to, to compare the subjects that you have taken at your current university with theirs to see if they are similar. If similar, then, you are given the exemption, if not, then you will need to retake that subject. For example, if you have taken Basic Accounting, then you will be exempted from Fundamentals in Accounting at the university that you want to go to because the subjects are similar. However, if you had taken Computer Skills and that subject is

not offered in the degree at the university that you want to go to, then this subject is not exempted.
  4. Photocopy of diploma certificate, if ready, if not, then request your university for the Letter of Completion
  5. Photocopy of IC – both sides

Study Diploma in IT or Computing at the best universities in Malaysia

The Diploma in Information Technology course is designed for those without any

computing knowledge as well as those who wish to pursue careers in computer-based environments, particularly in programming and information systems.

It can be known as the Diploma in IT or ICT or Computing or Computer Studies.

After SPM, students will need at least 3 credits including Maths and a pass in BM and Sejarah to join the Diploma in IT course. If you know that you want to go into IT, then students should just take the Diploma in IT rather than go for a Foundation program. The Foundation course is good for students who are not sure of which course they want to study yet. Students who know that they want IT may be bored with the non-IT subjects in the Foundation programme.

A lot of students assume that all Diploma in IT courses at the universities are the

same. They are not. It is important when choosing the Diploma in IT, to look at the subjects offered. My younger brother who is a Software Engineer advised me that students should look at diplomas that have programming subjects as these are the backbone of a good iT program.

Some Diploma in IT are more multimedia based while others focus on programming. Some universities could have a diploma with a specialism in software engineering. You have to decide which area you want to focus on in your future career before choosing the college or university, if not, you will end up with a diploma but without the necessary knowledge and skills in IT.

This is important because during interviews for IT jobs, you will be given a test to

assess your knowledge in IT. If you do not pass that test, you will not move on to be interviewed. IT is not like a business course, it is technical. If you do not have the necessary knowledge and skills, you will not go far in your career.
A lot of students make the mistake in choosing a cheap college because they assume that all IT diplomas are the same so there is no need to invest more. In saving a few thousand Ringgit for the few years in the diploma, they are throwing away hundreds of thousands in salary increments and promotions for the next 50 years of their work life because they did not gain the knowledge and skills that a good university would provide for them.

If you choose a lousy Kung Fu master, you will only learn his lousy skills. If you choose Ip Man, then maybe you can become the next Bruce Lee.

What will I study in a Diploma in IT?
A diploma in IT course provides general knowledge and skills in IT, programming,

databases, multimedia and networks.
The Diploma in Information Technology equips students with a strong grounding in the basic skills as well as providing a theoretical understanding which is important for an IT graduate. Students will be exposed to JAVA programming, VB.net, HTML, J2ME, Java Scripting as well as networking and business communication.

The modules lead into all aspects of software applications; internet technology; multimedia technology; information systems; operating systems; systems methodologies; visual programming; and database management systems.

Other non-IT courses such as marketing, business communication and problem-

solving, among others, are included in the course so that students are equipped with transferable skills that will enable them to work efficiently both independently and in teams.

Students will normally take about 24-25 subjects not including the MQA subjects which are Bahasa Kebangsaan, Moral, and Pengajian Malaysia. The MQA subjects are compulsory at all colleges and universities.
Sample of subjects that can be found in a Diploma in IT or Computing

  • Introduction to Information Technology

will be 2.5 years. After completing the diploma, you can generally enter into Year 2 of the related IT degree course. You will need to submit the transcripts and course outline to the university that you are interested in for them to perform the exemptions. If you go to Northumbria University, UK, you can enter into the final year of the related degree.

A diploma course is generally more practical compared to a degree course.

Coursework percentage and written examination percentage. Different learning processes can be used in the delivery of the programme, such as lectures, tutorials, computer lab work, team-based project, real life system development, presentations, independent projects supervised by supervisors from university lecturers or industry experts. It will vary from university to university on how the course is conducted.

Diploma holders can seek employment in the area of internet commerce/e-commerce; software development; database administration, system support, etc. But I would advise students to go for the degree because there are too many diploma and degree graduates out there therefore to remain competitive in the workforce, you should get a degree.

Many students have heard that there could be no jobs for IT graduates because
UCSI University located in Taman Connaught, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur

many are unemployed. While this may be true, the jobs are still plenty out there. It is not that there are no jobs, it is because the graduates do not have the skills and knowledge even after going through university. This is because they have chosen a cheaper university where they did not have experienced lecturers to equip them well. The university environment is also important because if most students speak in Mandarin at the university, then you won't be able to improve on your communication skills in English which is important in getting a job in a Multi National Company.

So, which college or university should I choose?
