Top Award-Winning Culinary School, KDU College Penang, Wins Awards at International Competitions

KDU College Penang Culinary School wins 23 Prizes in Bali, Indonesia

KDU’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) as lecturers and students bagged 23 prizes at the recent Bali

Salon Culinaire 2014 organised in conjunction with Food, Hotel and Tourism Bali 2014.
More significantly, the team’s triumph with 2 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals, 3 Bronze Medals and 16 Diplomas at this international challenge is once again a testament of SHTCA for producing students with outstanding culinary skills, creativity and presentation skills.
“This was the first international competition that so many of our final year students participated together. It was truly an amazing experience for them.” said Ms Cindy Loh, Academic Department Head of SHTCA at KDU College Penang.
“It is always good exposure for both lecturers and students to compete in an event with international standards and requirements. It proved to be an eye opener and gave our students the necessary experience to take part in more international events in the future.” Loh added.
Chef Muhamad Faizal, lecturer of SHTCA who is also the team leader of this competition said that the students’ successes have reflected KDU Penang’s commitment to provide quality education and a strong foundation in culinary arts.
“We competed with participants from Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam and Indonesia, and I was really amazed that our team actually came home with 23 prizes. It clearly shows that our students are well-prepared and are on par with the rest in the industry.” said Faizal.

In addition, students from KDU Penang’s School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts emerged victorious, at international

competitions held in Busan, Korea and Pattaya, Thailand in 2013.
In late July, six KDU College Penang – IMI Swiss Hospitality students were selected to represent not only KDU Penang but the city of Georgetown, Penang at the Tourism Universiade Student Travel Exchange Project (STEP) 2013 held at Tongmyong University of Busan City, South Korea.
The team comprising Pon Jo Yi and Wong Yuen Yan emerged Champions in the Tourism Product Planning Category.
Their entry “The Invincible Youth Adventures – 4 Days, 3 Nights Penang Tourism Package” that touted Penang’s rich cultural heritage, focusing on the distinct Hakka Village, indigenous British-colonized heritage sites and mouth-watering Penang street food, clearly won the panel of judges over.
Another team comprising Tan Hui Min Sutton and Ng Zhi Yi took home the Best Metropolitan Award in the same category with their “Penang - The Cosmopolitan Heart of the Northern Region Malaysia” proposal that highlighted Penang’s vast array of heritage and modern architecture buildings.
Ms. Cindy Loh, the Department Head for the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts was delighted with her students’ achievements. “It was a very educational trip and an eye opener for the students as it was their very first visit to East Asia.
Generating tourism ideas of international standard and appeal has always been one of the main program outcomes of our hospitality and tourism program and the students’ success in the TPO in Korea showcased their
outstanding quality even amongst international peers.
The main winners, Jo Yi and Yuen Yan were also invited to the 6th General Assembly in Daejon, Korea for the International Conference and University Students proposal competition held on the 4-7 September 2013.” said Ms. Cindy Loh.

Instructor, Chef Chuah Lay Yen, along with Sean Lim – KDU Penang’s alumnus and two other members of the Chefs Association of Penang did the college and Penang proud by emerging silver medalists in the seafood category at the Pattaya Culinary Cup 2013, held in Pattaya, Thailand.
Enthused Chef Darren Tan, a regular contestant at world culinary competitions who was extremely pleased with KDU Penang’s excellent performance, “We are very honoured to be part of this competition.
We always appreciate new challenges and see it as a learning platform to continuously develop ourselves in the international arena.”
