The annual regional award is aimed at cultivating young talent and raising the standards of design excellence in Malaysia and across nine other countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Pakistan, China, Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
Organised by Nippon Paint Malaysia in partnership with IJM Land Bhd, the Gold Winner for Interior Design is Lim Yong An from KBU International College. Lim Yong An also won the "Best Green Innovation Award".
Gold Winners in Architecture and Interior Design categories won cash prizes, paid internship contracts with IJM Land Bhd and a fully-paid trip to Japan.
Other KBU students also did well in the competition. Ernest Loh Yin-Sen won Silver, while Soo Mei Lian won "Best Colour Choice" and Yii Sii Lin won an Honorary Mention.
An impressive feat, the Nippon Paint Young Designer Award (NPYDA) 2014 awarded Gold Award for the Best College for Interior Design to KBU International College and the The Best Lecturer for Interior Design wen to KBU's Chua Huwi Huwi.
For the Interior Design Category, Lim conceptualised the LEAF Agricultural Nursery, a unique idea for creating more green space within the city.
“I wanted to recreate the feel of a rural village or farm, with stalls and cafe, and provide an experience where people can come

together to enjoy fresh produce,” explained Lim.
Addressing the Sinar Kota area with its high density challenges, his vertical, urban farming design maximises space, engages the senses, educates urbanites and unites a fragmented community through the experience of growing their own food and instilling greater appreciation for the environment.
The Gold Winners in the Architecture and Interior Design categories each received a RM3,000 cash prize, a six-month paid internship at IJM Land Bhd and a fully-paid trip to Japan for the Japan Learning Programme for their innovative approach to the official theme for 2014, “Re:Think. Re:Create. Our Community, Our Home.”
At the same time, the Silver Winners in each category also receive a six-month paid internship at IJM Land Bhd and a RM2,000 cash prize respectively.
Furthermore, the panel of judges were also encouraged by the quality of work when reviewing the entries and decided to offer internships at their respective consultancies as well to selected participants, bringing even greater value to NPYDA as a platform for nurturing young talent.
“The theme ‘Re:Think. Re:Create’ has a special meaning for us at Nippon Paint, because it encourages us to see things in a whole new light – this is the essence of creativity, and we want to do everything we can to nurture this ability in the younger generation, so they can break through the boundaries of conventional design.
“Without the inspiration of the young, the design world will be stagnant. However, we also recognise the value of experience,

which is why the Japan Learning Programme, which will take place in March 2015 in Osaka, will fuse the ideas of the young with the insights of renowned industry experts – together, they will shape the future of our physical world,” said Nippon Paint Malaysia managing director Mr Yaw Seng Heng.
Sharing similar philosophies on design, IJM Land Bhd chief executive officer and managing director Datuk Soam Heng Choon said, “As one of Malaysia’s premier property developers, we have always aspired to create living spaces that inspire and nurture the human spirit while maintaining respect for the environment.
We all want homes and communities that are socially sustainable and practical where people want to live, work and enjoy life, and we look forward to nurturing NPYDA winners’ design thinking skills to address the multi-faceted issues that we faced today.”
NPYDA 2014, the seventh instalment since its launch in 2008, received a total of 623 entries in Malaysia this year (528 in Architecture and 95 in Interior Design), where each entrant was challenged to create a community-centric and sustainable township that provides high quality of life for all ages and walks of life.
The NPYDA was birthed out of a desire to nurture young talent, setting the bar ever higher for innovative design and ensuring greater visibility and exposure for winners across Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region.
