of specialised industries and professions. They operate across the private and public sectors, dealing in permanent positions, contract roles and temporary assignments.
Hays operate in 48 locations throughout Asia Pacific, including 10 offices across Asia. They find permanent jobs for over 14,000 people a year and temporary and contract assignments for over 52,000 people a year and at any one time they employ over 13,000 temporaries and contractors.

Project Managers – These professionals are in high demand in all IT businesses in response to the expansion of the global IT

industry and the need to deliver service quality. They are required to direct and deliver projects successfully within their specified timeframe. Often Project Managers are not technically skilled within software development, but they are skilled people managers. Those with AGILE methodology experience are highly sought.
Business Analysts – Analysts with both technical and business acumen are in demand to translate business plans into technical requirements by liaising with clients, business users, production teams and vendors. Candidates need experience in performing UAT and SIT. Demand for these analysts is highest within the financial and IT consultancy industries.
IT Security, Risk, Compliance and Audit specialists – With technology moving to more sophisticated platforms such as the Cloud, IT Security professionals continue to be in high demand. Skills involved in the implementation and monitoring of IT policy are expected to be in great demand going forward as companies look to ensure that data is protected within the virtualization technologies.
Mobile Application Developers (Android/IOS) – This is still a relatively new area and most Malaysian candidates lack an iOS and Android development background. Senior Mobile Developers prefer to work freelance as they can receive a relatively stable income from projects. Also, talented individuals often choose to move to neighbouring countries for more lucrative salaries.

Trends in Computing and IT Jobs in Malaysia

Due to company mergers and acquisitions, we have seen a high volume of vacancy activity in IT departments. Also,

multinational data and development centres are expanding in Asia and creating new job opportunities. However, the local candidate pool still lacks the required skills.
Many institutions have opted to introduce shared services or data centres in Malaysia as it is seen as an attractive country to set up infrastructure. Centres are cost effective due to lower labour and set up costs, as well as favourable government legislation.
In Malaysia, financial institutions are still using relatively old operating systems and platforms (AS400, Cobol Mainframe), compared to other developed regions.
In the past year there has been an influx of applicants from India, Indonesia and the Philippines. However, government legislation continues to restrict foreign workers and only a limited pool of candidates specialising in niche areas have been able to secure positions on a contract basis.

In order to succeed in the competitive field of accounting, students must choose the best universities in Malaysia to study. The best university doesn't necessarily mean the most expensive. Students should choose the right university that fits them which has a good reputation for business programs, excellent facilities, top lecturers and an English-speaking student environment.
Students can consider studying the computing and IT degree at Asia Pacific University where they offer various specialisations in Network ComputingSoftware Engineering, and others for students to choose from. Students at APU will get a degree awarded by APU as well as Staffordshire University, UK.
For affordable universities with excellent facilities, students can consider UCSI University or HELP University, both with more than 20 years of experience in higher education in Malaysia. Students after SPM in Sarawak can study the Foundation at UCSI University's Kuching campus first before continuing on to the degree at their campus in Kuala Lumpur. Students interested in Computer Science can go for Nilai University.
Top colleges offering computer science and IT programs in Malaysia are KBU International CollegeKDU College Penang and HELP College of Arts & Technology. Graduates from both colleges are awarded degrees by their UK University partners.

    A university degree is no longer enough to secure a job in Malaysia. Employers in Malaysia are looking for individuals with multiple skill sets. Employers today expect their employees to be able to multitask and communicate well in the English language.
    The growing demand for highly skilled workers in the ICT sector has helped to push salaries up the scale.  According to the ICT Job Market Outlook 2014, the average salary of ICT professionals in 2013 was RM7,152, up 7.2% from RM6,673 in 2012.
    This was above Malaysia's gross domestic product growth of 5.5% and inflation rate of 3.5%. The survey was conducted by the National ICT Association of Malaysia (Pikom) in collaboration with Jobstreet. com and supported by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDEC).
    Pikom chairman Cheah Kok Hoong anticipates that given the positive outlook in the ICT sector, the salary increase for the industry would have hit 8.7% as at the end of 2014.  Apart from ICT, other sectors that are also full of opportunities for jobseekers are hospitality, accounting, human resource and engineering in industrial services.
    The perks and benefits from jobs in ICT, engineering, banking and finance, as well as sales and marketing are also more attractive in Malaysia.
    According to research by recruitment specialist Kelly Services, employers in Malaysia are more willing to pay to relocate talent in technical and revenue-generating positions. A salary guide by the company shows that there has been an increase in the number of hot jobs in the technical field, with a high demand in ICT, followed by engineering, finance and marketing.

    IT Professionals in Malaysia can command high Salaries

    The salary that one gets from the career is one of the important factors in choosing

    our course. We do not want to choose a course and then only find out that it does not pay well after investing so much in the degree.
    I know of a college that charges RM50,000 for a diploma in automotive technology where graduates will come out and work as mechanics earning only about RM1500 on average a month!
    To me, it does not make sense to pay so much just to become a mechanic earning that  amount. Therefore, students should choose their courses and universities wisely based on facts and evidence. The IT field is a great place to work and according to statistics, the pay is pretty good in Malaysia and the prospects are increasing.
    Computing or ICT constitutes 10.5% of GDP in Malaysia, and the goal is to boost it to 17% by 2020.
    Datuk Ghazali, chief executive of the government's Multimedia Development
    Corporation, points out, salaries in technology industries are 90% higher than the average. This offers a chance to retain Malaysians who might otherwise leave for higher-paid jobs in neighbouring countries.
    According to Pikom's (Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia)  ICT Job Market Outlook report released in 2012, the average salary of ICT professionals in Malaysia rose 10.9% from RM5,626 in 2010 to RM6,240 in 2011.
    Given the prospective outlook for the economy and other positive factors within the

    ICT industry, PIKOM anticipates a 9.0% rise in the average salary of ICT professionals in 2012, which would average out to RM6,800 per month.
    Meanwhile, the Pikom ICT Job Market outlook also revealed the following interesting observations:
    • The average salary of new entrants to ICT job market after graduation has gone up by 24% to RM2,238, from RM1,800;
    • Of the 25 industries surveyed, the results showed that oil and gas positions dominated the list, with an average monthly salary of RM8,020 followed by The telecommunication sector, which netted RM6,848, 15% lower;
    • Pikom-job_market-2012-salary
    • The average monthly remuneration earned by ICT software professionals having less than five years working experience
      KDU College Penang campus
      KDU College Penang campus
      was RM3,600 in comparison to only RM3,025 for ICT hardware professionals and RM3,225 by ICT call center professionals;
    • Software development applications professionals experienced on an average a 19.3% rise in monthly salary from RM6,960 in 2010 to RM8,310 in 2011. Similarly, ICT professionals in enterprise resource planning (ERP)/business applications received a 14.5% increment from RM7,550 in 2010 to RM8,650 in 2011;
    • Big corporations and multinationals having employment size more than 1,000 on an average paid monthly salary of RM7,052 , which was 36.4% more than companies with fewer than 100 people, where the amount was only RM5,169; and
    • Geographically, ICT employees in Klang Valley netted 9% more than their counterparts in Johor; in comparison to Penang region the scale differed only marginally by 1.7%.

    Average Salary of Computing IT graduates in Malaysia
