KBU Engineering Graduate Shares his Experience
I had the opportunity to interview Tidus Yip, a recent graduate from KBU International College's 3+0 Sheffield Hallam University Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
His hometown is from Kampar, Perak but had grown up in Kuala Lumpur completing his Secondary school at S.M.K Taman Ehsan
EduSpiral: Share a little bit about yourself. Like what, hobbies, activities you like, sports, etc.
Tidus Yip: I'm outgoing guy and love all kind of sports with a passion in dancing. I love socialising with my friends as well as build a bond with different types people that can give me different perspectives.
EduSpiral: What are your top subjects in SPM? What were your favorite subjects and why?
Tidus Yip: Math subjects, including Modern Maths and Add Maths as well as Physics and Chemistry. Physics is my favourite subject because that is the only subject that can blend in with my imagination and eventually making it work.
EduSpiral: What were some courses that you wanted to study? How did you choose your current course?
Tidus Yip: If I wasn’t in engineering course , I might have chosen Hotel Management. Besides calculation stuff, I love to be a event planner with some cooking skills.
EduSpiral: Did you visit any education fairs, colleges, universities, etc?
Tidus Yip: Not really, but I did visit an Education Fair at the KLCC Convention Centre once.
EduSpiral: What are the reasons that you chose your current course?
Tidus Yip: For a better career in future and better opportunities. I was excited me during the KBU International College Open Day when Mr.Lye (Head of Engineering School) told me I would learn how to put thousands of data into a microchip during the final year.
What are the career prospects for your course?
Tidus Yip: Well, I have been listening to many kinds of career talks, and I am more interested in sales engineering or as a contractor.
EduSpiral: What are some subjects you are taking now at university? Are they difficult? What are your favourite subjects and why?
Tidus Yip: I have finished my studies, however, the subject that's challenging will be programming and digital related subjects as they required high level of understand how the whole thing work, and it always come with a flow chart to represent it. Sometimes I can't get a whole picture of it .
My favourite subjects will be power electronic and analogue related subject. One of reason is most of time it required calculation to sort things out and I love calculation. Moreover, in analogue subject , we need to use apparatus such oscilloscope, multimeter, function generator , DC generator supply to make a circuit work, it gives a lot of fun when doing it.
EduSpiral: How are the lecturers at your university? Share about 2 favorite lecturers and why you like them.
Tidus Yip: I would not skip my Project Supervisor and also analogue subject lecturer from Year 1 to Year 3, Mr Tham Kwong Keong. Well, he used to be very strict to every student, especially me, because Im his project student during final year.
However, he showed his responsibility as a Project supervisor and lecturer by providing the notes for the entire syllabus and making clear explanations. He is also never late to class or lab session.
Second favourite lecturer, I think is Mr Lye Boon Han, our Head of Engineering School. During the final year, when everyone is stressing out, he always gives a motivation speech to us, and reasons of not to giving up at this moment.
He became not only our lecturer, and also an advisor to give guidance and hints to us.
EduSpiral: Did you participate in the extra curricular activities? Name them and share what you have learnt and your best memories.
Tidus Yip: Yes I did. There is a time I work as an event organiser in Rotaract Club in our college. One of the unforgettable event will be the Kpop Competition, it is related to dancing, so I'm happy working with it.
Throughout the event it enhanced my leadership, it taught me how to deal with different people, especially I have to understand my crew member’s temperaments so that we can work things out peacefully. I also learnt how to arrange everything effectively, assign tasks accordingly to the crew and also how to deal with sponsorship.
EduSpiral: What are the best facilities at your university and why?
Tidus Yip: The Engineering Labs, basically they just provide everything an engineer student need, and I heard our college laboratory apparatus is much better than other college or university.
The next thing I feel awesome is my college’s multipurpose hall. Beside used as a exam hall, it is also used as badminton courts for students to book and free use.
Furthermore, KBU also allows any club or society to organise events in the hall without any charge, as well as the Kpop Competition
EduSpiral: How are the students at your university? What is your best memory at your university?
Tidus Yip: Basically they very friendly and lovely, but I do hope they become more sporting, being supportive to college’s events. My best memory is when I took part in every event organised by the Rotaract Club of KBU. I had a very good time with the club members making a lot of new friends and also I learnt a lot of stuff that I could never find it in a text book.
EduSpiral: Would you recommend students to take your current course?
Tidus Yip: I would not recommend any course because students should make up their own mind and do some research before choosing a course, because this take everyone at least 4 years to complete a degree level course. However, I would like to give advice and share my experience with them.
EduSpiral: What would your advise be to students now going for their SPM exams?
Tidus Yip: Study hard, and yet learn how to relax your mind, release your stress and tension. Because you are supposed to study with joy, and not suffer, and also remember the main purpose of studying.
EduSpiral: What would you advise post SPM students on choosing the right course and university?
Tidus Yip: Take some time to do research to favourite course of different university, make comparisons so that you could make up your mind before making an decision that will affect your next few years in university life. Do not rush, choose wisely and be rational, and eventually you will pick the right choice at the end.
