What is Logistics Management?
The Oxford Dictionary defines Logistics as the ‘art of supplying and organising services and equipment’. Basically it is the procurement, maintenance, and transportation of materials from one place to another on time at a minimum cost.
However, in today’s context it can mean a number of things from packing, haulage as well as supply chain management. Though the service sectors will come to play an increasingly important role, at the heart of any positive long-term economy is a healthy primary industry sector.
Just to produce, however, is not enough, the products must be efficiently acquired, handled, stored, maintained, distributed, and sold. Successful analysis and implementation of logistics strategies is the key.
In the era of globalisation, the movement of products efficiently and ability to get them moved quickly would make a big difference to the profitability of a business. The modes and carriers selected must complement the supply chain strategy and must be responsive to the needs of customers and the entire chain.
To gain a competitive advantage, service and time compression is vital to ensure customers are able to purchase the items and inventories are under control. They must be able to plan the whole supply chain effectively from the time the product is made to storage, delivery to its worldwide stores, delivery to the distributors, and finally to the hands of the customer. They must make sure that there are no delays and to effectively deal with the delays if any.
In moving products from country to country to country through various modes of transportation, there needs to be effective communication. Information technology is key to being responsive. It must be both internal – the enterprise – and external, with customers and suppliers.
In logistics, being able to calculate the cost and to find ways to save will affect the bottom line greatly. The logistics specialist must factor in the cost of the entire supply chain, both operating and capital. It is not only the cost of discrete cost factors such as freight or warehousing.
Malaysia is a fortunate country. Rich in both natural and human resources it stands poised to enter the new millennium ready to take its place as a developed country.
In addition the logistics (transportation and warehousing) industry is rapidly expanding in South East Asia therefore requiring individuals with specialized knowledge and skills.
With the many ports in Penang, Klang and Johor, as well as the air hubs, the country therefore will need highly trained professionals in the logistics field to meet this demand. The logistics service provider operates in a high-risk environment with many variables coming into play.
